Japanese poet and author Ichiyō Higuchi (1872-1896) was the first woman to be recognized as a professional writer during the Meiji era. She was such a prominent presence in Japanese literature that she was featured on the older Japanese currency 5000 yen released 20 years ago.
Takekurabe is the story of Midori and her life growing up in the red-light district with her older sister who is a popular Geisha.
