Distinct, vibrant and colorful — these are the illustrated works by Japanese artist Yuh Takahashi.
Paper Treats first discovered the works of illustrator Yuh Takahashi at a gallery shop in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture. It was a postcard of a poodle in France holding a baguette that first caught my attention— as I immediately thought of one of my dear customers. There was something deeply captivating in each postcard displayed in the shop and I was quite mesmerized. The joy of discovering artists is that their work continues to stay with you.
Yuh Takahashi’s creative journey spans both Japan and Europe. Originally interested in landscape design, she majored in environmental studies in grad school but never let go of her dream to become an artist. While studying, she attended evening art classes and soon began working as a freelance illustrator. Later, she moved to Germany because of her husband’s job transfer—a turning point in her creative path. Although work from Japanese clients decreased, Yuh embraced it as an opportunity to grow, participating in art workshops where she learned acrylic and watercolor techniques from European artists. “In Japan, the illustration world changes trends very quickly, so once you step outside those trends, it can be hard to find work. In Europe, however, people appreciate timeless art that isn’t bound by popularity—and that suited me perfectly."
Yuh currently lives in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and grew up in Ehime (a serene seaside region along the Seto Inland Sea). Her artwork reflects the worldly journey and brings together cultures: “In Japan, people say my drawings look European, while overseas they say it feels cute and distinctly Japanese. I think the charm lies in the combination of both.” 💛
